Desmond Tutu was made an Honorary Freeman of the City of London last week. He gave a wonderful address after his formal acceptance, using the recent election of only the second woman Lord Mayor in history as his springboard. His theme was that until women can be women, men cannot fully be human. He commented that in South Africa, until they ordained women as priests they hadn’t appreciated just how much they were denying themselves in terms of their contribution to the church. He urged any who were reticent about women bishops not to worry and to look forward to the unique gifts that would be coming their way.
