WATCH is overjoyed about the appointment of the Venerable Rachel Treweek as the next Bishop of Gloucester.

As our first female Diocesan Bishop, she will be part of the House of Bishops as well as the College of Bishops. This is another significant step forward to attaining fuller flourishing of the Church of England for the good of our wider nation. As a Diocesan Bishop, Rachel will be the bishop with ultimate responsibility over the whole Diocese.

Gloucester reaps the harvest of the stalwart and determined work by Bishop Michael Perham both locally and nationally, and as an Honorary Vice‑President of WATCH.

It is also particularly providential that today we see the Lords Spiritual (Women) bill, receive Royal Assent. This means that when a vacancy arises, Rachel will be the next Diocesan to enter the House of Lords.

Hilary Cotton, Chair of WATCH, said:

‘Hallelujah! Gloucester Diocese, the Church of England, and the wider world will all benefit hugely from Ven Rachel Treweek’s experience, presence and wisdom. It’s fabulous that we now have three role models for younger people of women in leadership in the Church of England. This is a significant step towards a Church that truly welcomes and affirms everyone, in response to God’s ever-surprising love.’
