Yesterday evening, the House of Bishops announced its approval of the report of the Working Group on women in the episcopate. It is regrettable that the House of Bishops could not amend its standing orders in time to allow senior women clergy to participate in the whole of this meeting. Nonetheless, WATCH welcomes the House of Bishops’ commitment to proceeding towards a resolution of the question of women bishops, and the dedication of significant synodical time to the matter. However until we see the report of the Working Group and the accompanying separate report from the Archbishops, it is difficult for us to comment further. We await the opportunity to consider the new proposals, which we hope include the option of simple legislation to allow women to be bishops.
