WATCH is overjoyed that the Church in Wales has elected its first female bishop. Rt Rev Joanna Penberthy will be consecrated as bishop of St David’s next year. This makes the ninth Anglican Province to have female and male bishops: USA, New Zealand, Canada, Australia, Southern Africa, South India, Ireland, England, Wales. Across the world, a further nine Anglican Provinces have agreed to consecrate women as bishops but have not done so yet. And in Africa, only the Provinces of Central Africa and Nigeria do not ordain women to any orders.

“We rejoice with our friends in the Church in Wales, who have waited and worked for so long for this change. Let’s hope that the Anglican Church in Scotland follows suit soon.”
